Apnea.

Halcyon would never describe her manner of reading as a 'devouring'. Her experiences were always much more breathtakingly hazardous then simply feasting on words; when she found herself behind the doors of her dormitory room, surrounded by phrases and covers, she would begin, and in these books, she would drown herself. Halcyon would fight the tides late into the night, and meet head-on the consideration of letting herself slip away and be lost within the pages; in the morning she would pull herself from the delightful, choking waters and stumble into the halls of her academy, lungs still filled with words.

random thought -- since "she" doesn't have a name, it would be interesting if halcyon didn't either. yey pronouns.

  2. You have no idea how much I relate to this. You captured the feeling beautifully and I was completely drawn in. The analogy of almost drowning at the end is beautiful.
